Unveiling the Unseen: The Start of an Unfamiliar Adventure in Hawaii
Updated: Mar 13, 2025

Hawaii is not just an island paradise; it is a promise of exquisite landscapes, rich culture, and unforgettable experiences. As we prepared for our adventure, a mix of excitement and curiosity filled the air. On December 15th, we embarked on a journey that would take us far from the familiar and into the heart of the idyllic archipelago.
A Day of Travel
Our journey to Hawaii began early, with a full day of flights ahead of us. Traveling with my mother, we had a long but exhilarating itinerary—first flying to Los Angeles, then up to San Francisco, and finally making our way to Hawaii. The anticipation built with each leg of the journey, but by the time we landed at 9 PM, exhaustion had fully set in.
The next leg of our travel took us to San Francisco. The aerial views were stunning as we caught glimpses of iconic landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island. However, this was merely a pit stop. Soon after, we boarded our final flight to Hawaii, each leg of the journey feeling more thrilling than the last.
As our plane descended over the islands, an ocean of turquoise water framed by lush green mountains greeted us. The picturesque view stirred our excitement, temporarily overshadowing the exhaustion of travel. The local time was now 9 PM, but the magical charm of Hawaii sparked a new wave of energy within us.
Arrival in Paradise
On our first day, we woke up at 4:30 AM—the time zone difference had us wide awake before the sun. The hotel room was quiet, except for the soft hum of the ceiling fan, and outside, the world was still dark. Rather than trying to force ourselves back to sleep, we embraced the early start, spending the morning eagerly waiting for the sun to rise.
As the first light of dawn began to break, we stepped outside to take it all in. The sky slowly shifted to soft orange, casting a golden glow over the landscape. The air was warm and salty, and the distant sound of waves added to the peacefulness of the moment.
With the whole day ahead of us, we decided to begin with a good breakfast. We set out to find a local spot to eat, excited to get our first taste of Hawaiian flavors.

After watching the sunrise, we made our way to Auntie’s Kitchen, a cozy spot with an outdoor seating area that allowed us to enjoy the gorgeous Hawaiian weather while we ate. I ordered the pineapple pancakes, which were fluffy and topped with caramelized pineapple chunks that added the perfect touch of sweetness. The warm maple syrup complemented each bite, making it a tropical delight. My mom went for the avocado toast, which came with creamy avocado spread over crispy toast, seasoned just right to enhance the natural flavors. It was fresh, satisfying, and bursting with flavor. The relaxed atmosphere and delicious food made it the perfect way to begin our day in Hawaii.

After breakfast, we spent most of the day relaxing on the beach, soaking in the warmth and listening to the waves. We also enjoyed some quiet time on our hotel balcony, sipping drinks and taking in the stunning views. As evening approached, we headed out to watch the sunset. The sky was painted with vibrant oranges as the sun sank behind Kaho‘olawe Island. The colors reflected off the ocean, creating a serene and remarkable moment—the perfect way to end a peaceful day in paradise.

Exploring the West Side of the Island
On our third day, we decided to spend the day exploring the west side of the island. We took a winding road, stopping along the way to take in the striking views. Our first stop was at Kaanapali Overlook, where we were treated to a captivating view of the vibrant blue ocean stretching out before us. The colors of the water were captivating, and we couldn't help but take in the beauty of the coastline.
Next, we made our way to the Kanapali Blowhole, a natural wonder that left us in awe. As we stood there, we watched as water shot up from the hole, propelled by the waves crashing beneath the surface. To our surprise, a rainbow appeared in the mist, adding an extra touch of magic to the scene. It was one of those moments that felt truly special—a reminder of how extraordinary nature can be.
After visiting the Kanapali Blowhole, we made our way back to the hotel and spent the rest of the day relaxing on the beach. It was the perfect way to unwind after our scenic adventure. I decided to try snorkeling, and it turned out to be an extraordinary experience. As I swam out into the crystal-clear water, I was amazed by the vibrant fish that surrounded me—so many colors and types that I could hardly believe it. The water was such a deep, gorgeous blue, and it felt like I was swimming in another world. The underwater sights were truly remarkable, adding a magical touch to an already perfect day.
A Scenic Journey & Our Encounter with a Hawaiian Turtle
On our fourth day, we set out to explore the famous Road to Hana, eager to see the spectacular landscapes along the way. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we weren’t able to make it all the way to Hana since we had a luau to attend later in the day. However, the drive itself was just as awe-inspiring. Along the way, we stopped at several cool overlooks that gave us extraordinary views of the island’s east side. The lush, green landscapes contrasted gorgeously with the deep blue ocean, making every stop feel like a moment frozen in time.
One of the highlights of the day was when we stopped at Kaulahao. There, we spotted one of the big sea turtles that are so iconic to Hawaii. It was a bit of a wait, but finally, we were rewarded with the sight of this magnificent creature gliding gracefully in the water. Although we only saw one turtle, it was an remarkable experience.
That evening, we attended a luau, a celebration of Hawaiian culture filled with music, dance, and extraordinary food. As we arrived, we were welcomed with gorgeously handcrafted purple leis, each one carefully strung together with fresh, fragrant flowers. Knowing that these leis were made by hand made them feel even more special, a true symbol of Hawaiian hospitality and tradition.
For the luau, we dressed up in long, flowy dresses that swayed with the warm island breeze. The vibrant colors and floral patterns blended perfectly with the tropical setting. Paired with our handcrafted purple leis, we felt immersed in the beauty and tradition of the evening, ready to enjoy a night of culture, music, and unforgettable memories.
The food at the luau was a feast of traditional Hawaiian dishes, each one offering a taste of the island’s rich culinary heritage. We enjoyed kalua pork, slow-roasted in an underground imu, giving it a smoky and tender flavor. There was also poi, a taro root paste that’s a staple in Hawaiian cuisine, as well as lomi lomi salmon, a refreshing dish made with diced salmon, tomatoes, and onions. We also had fresh pineapple, sweet and juicy, along with coconut-based desserts that perfectly rounded out the meal.
With the sound of traditional music playing and the glow of tiki torches lighting up the night, we settled in for an evening filled with delicious food, mesmerizing performances, and the spirit of aloha.
Day 4: The Windy Road to Hana
As we began our journey toward the north side of the island, our first stop was Paia, a charming surf town known for its laid-back atmosphere and stunning beaches. We made our way to the shoreline, where we were met with the incredible sight of 12-foot waves crashing against the coast. The sheer power of the ocean was mesmerizing, with surfers bravely taking on the towering swells. Watching the waves roll in, we could feel the raw energy of the island’s north shore, a thrilling start to our adventure on the Road to Hana.
Once we left Paia, we officially started the Road to Hana, a drive unlike any other. This was easily one of the windiest roads we had ever experienced—even more winding than the Pacific Coast Highway in California. The road twisted and turned through lush rainforest, often narrowing to a single lane, requiring us to yield at one-way bridges and pull over to let faster drivers pass.
Our first stop along the way was Ko‘olau West Makaiwa, where we were surrounded by vibrant tropical flowers in every color imaginable. The air was filled with their sweet fragrance, and the lush greenery made it feel like we had stepped into a hidden paradise. It was the perfect place to take a break, stretch our legs, and soak in the beauty of Maui’s east side before continuing our journey.

Further along the Road to Hana, we came across a charming sight—three small waterfalls known as the Three Little Bears. Each waterfall cascaded gently down the rocks, creating a peaceful and picturesque stop. The sound of the water flowing over the stones added to the serenity of the moment, making it a perfect spot to pause and take in the natural beauty of Maui.
Our next stop was Ko‘olau Forest, where we were greeted by a much larger waterfall. Here, we watched as adventurous swimmers jumped from the rocks into the pool below, fully embracing the island’s spirit. The lush greenery surrounding the falls made the scene feel almost surreal, like something out of a postcard. It was one of those moments that truly captured the magic of the Road to Hana.
After seeing the waterfalls, I didn’t take many pictures since there weren’t many places to pull off, especially with me being the one driving. As we continued, we passed several black sand beaches and stunning coastal views, each more remarkable than the last. The drive itself was an experience—winding through lush forests and cliffsides that opened up to glimpses of the endless ocean.
When we finally arrived in Hana, we were a bit surprised. We weren’t sure if we were even in Hana yet. Given the long, winding journey to get there, we had expected a larger town. But instead, Hana had a quiet, small-town charm that felt like a peaceful retreat, tucked away at the very end of one of the most scenic roads in the world.
We decided to eat at a charming spot called Hana Ranch Restaurant. At first, we weren’t sure what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised by the amazing view that accompanied our meal. The restaurant had a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere, and we were shocked it wasn’t busier, considering how impressive the surroundings were. It was the perfect place to relax and enjoy Hana’s peaceful vibe while soaking in the gorgeous scenery around us.

Before leaving the Road to Hana, we made one final stop at the Hana Lava Tube, a fascinating natural wonder that revealed the island's volcanic history. As we entered the cave, we were surrounded by cool, dark walls shaped by ancient lava flows. The passageways were narrow, with impressive stalactites and stalagmites enhancing the underground beauty. One of the most intriguing features was a small crevice in the ground that required army crawling to get through. When I approached, I noticed a group of three kids already inside, and I honestly didn’t know how they all managed to fit, as it felt incredibly claustrophobic. They urged me to give it a try, but I kept brushing them off, saying I was too old. However, once they left, I realized this might be a rare opportunity, so I decided to give it a shot. Crawling through that tight, small space was more challenging than I anticipated—there was barely enough room to move, and I couldn't even stand up. I had to keep my body low and crawl through on my hands and knees, feeling the cool, damp earth all around me. While walking through the cave, I also noticed light shining through a hole above, casting a cool, atmospheric glow that made the experience feel even more surreal. When I finally made it back out, my mom told me the tour guide had mentioned the cave continued further, and she joked, "I hoped you didn’t go all the way!" I laughed and said, "Oops," but then went on to describe just how tight the space was and how I couldn’t imagine how anyone could go further. It turned out to be an unforgettable experience, offering a surreal connection to Maui’s geological past and wrapping up our adventure on the Road to Hana in the most unique way possible.
Once we finished exploring the lava tube, we realized how late it had gotten, and without any phone signal, we started heading back to the hotel. As the sun began to set, we found ourselves winding through the mountains, trying to keep pace with the cars ahead of us to avoid getting lost. I had been following a jeep, hoping to stick behind it, but it pulled off, leaving me to lead the way. From that point on, we just played catch-up, following the leader as we made our way back. There was no time to stop and see other sights we might have missed since the sun was setting quickly, and we definitely didn’t want to be on the Road to Hana after dark. With no car ahead of us now, I had to stay focused, but luckily the roads were familiar enough that we didn’t lose our way. After that experience, I’m not sure if I’ll ever drive the Road to Hana again.
Day 5: Hiking Wailuku Mountain- A Journey Through Nature
Hiking has always been something I truly enjoyed, so I was eager to explore a trail in Maui during my vacation. I set out on a solo adventure, driving up the winding roads to the park. The journey itself felt like a warm-up for the hike, as the twisting turns and steady climb up the mountain added to the anticipation. When I arrived at the parking area, I noticed there were only two spots left—one covered in broken glass and another way in the back that was only half-paved. I opted for the safer choice and pulled into the half-paved spot before setting off on my hike.
The first section of the trail was a brutally steep, paved incline that immediately made me question my decision. I could feel the burn in my calves within minutes and started to regret taking on the hike so quickly. Ahead of me, a few hikers had resorted to walking backward up the hill, though I wasn’t sure what good that would do. Still, I figured I’d give it a shot and, to my surprise, it actually helped. Once I finally conquered that initial climb, the trail opened up into something truly spectacular. I found myself surrounded by towering trees, their branches intertwining overhead to create a canopy unlike anything I had ever seen before. The dense forest felt like a hidden world, untouched and serene, making all the effort to get there completely worth it.

As I continued making my way up the mountain, I came across a small outlook that offered a stunning view of the landscape. From there, I could see the neighboring mountain standing tall beside me, its slopes covered in endless greenery. As I stepped closer, the sight became even more mesmerizing—a vast expanse of lush, vibrant foliage stretching as far as the eye could see. The sheer depth of the landscape made me pause for a moment, taking it all in. It felt like I was standing on the edge of something truly untouched, a perfect reminder of Maui’s natural beauty.
This was not even the beginning of the hike. As I continued making my way around the mountain, I encountered several more overlooks, each offering a new perspective of the stunning landscape. Some gave me a perfect view of the towering mountain beside me, its green slopes rolling endlessly into the distance. Others provided an awe-inspiring glimpse of the ocean, a deep blue stretching far beyond the horizon. The higher I climbed, the more incredible the views became, making every step worth the effort.
At the beginning of my ascent, I noticed clouds surrounding the mountain, wrapping around the peaks in the distance. Yet, strangely, not a single cloud hovered over me to provide shade. The sun beat down relentlessly as I climbed, making me wish I had brought more water. When I finally reached the top, I was rewarded with the most stunning views of Maui. The mountains stretched endlessly in every direction, their lush green peaks rolling into the distance. Down below, I could make out glimpses of the deep blue ocean, a striking contrast to the vibrant landscape around me. Standing there, taking it all in, I felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. The steep climb, the burning calves, and the exhaustion were all worth it for this incredible moment, looking out over the island from one of its highest points.
As I made my way back down, I realized I spent most of my time running rather than walking. The steep incline that had made the ascent so challenging now turned into a downhill sprint, and I found myself moving quickly, almost effortlessly, with gravity on my side. It was exhilarating, though I had to stay mindful of my footing on the uneven steps and rocky paths. By the time I reached the bottom, I was out of breath but filled with a deep sense of accomplishment. The hike had been tough, but the views, the challenge, and the thrill of the descent made it an unforgettable experience—one that truly made my time in Maui special.
Next time, I’ll make sure to start earlier and bring more water, as I hadn’t realized just how hot and challenging the hike would be. Despite that, I’d highly recommend it to anyone visiting Maui. The views, the sense of adventure, and the rewarding feeling of reaching the top made it all worth it. It was an unforgettable experience, and next time, I’d do it again—just with a little more preparation!
Day 6: Whale Watching at Sunset: A Unforgettable Experiences
We had finally started to adjust to Hawaii’s time zone, no longer waking up at 4:30 AM. By this point in the trip, we were naturally getting up around 7:30 or 8 AM, which made it easier to enjoy the days without feeling completely out of sync. That morning, we watched the sunrise from the balcony, knowing we wouldn’t make it down to the beach in time. Even from where we were, it was still one of the most beautiful sunrises I had ever seen. The sky lit up with shades of pink, orange, and gold, casting a warm glow over the ocean. It was a peaceful, quiet moment—a perfect way to start the day.
For this trip, I had chosen two big events—the luau and the sunset cruise. So when I checked my phone and saw that the sunset cruise had been canceled, I was incredibly upset. As I told my mom what had happened, she suggested I try reaching out to the company to ask about other options. Instead of waiting for a response, I sprang into action and immediately started searching for another sunset cruise.
After some quick research, I found a three-hour cruise that looked perfect and booked it right away. With our new plans set, we spent the rest of the day relaxing. I went snorkeling, enjoying the vibrant underwater world, while my mom stayed on the balcony, completely immersed in her book. It was a slow, peaceful afternoon as we waited for the time to drive to the harbor where our new boat would be waiting.
Finally, 4 o’clock arrived, and it was time to get ready for our sunset cruise. I wore a blue romper, feeling both comfortable and excited for the evening ahead, while my mom wore a beautiful, flowy dress with a floral pattern that perfectly matched the tropical setting. With everything set, we were ready for our sunset adventure!
As we arrived, we weren’t even sure where to go. I had directions to the marina, but it wasn’t clear exactly where we were supposed to meet everyone. We wandered around, asking people if they were on the same cruise, but no one seemed to have the same one as us. Unsure of what to do, we decided to wait near the front entrance.
There was a small store nearby, and as my nerves started to get the best of me, I went inside to ask for help. I was worried we had somehow missed our boat. The man at the counter reassured me that we just had to wait outside until they called our group. Relieved, we stepped back out and did just that, keeping a close eye out for any announcements.

Once our group was finally called, we started walking a long way to get to the boat. The marina seemed much bigger than I had expected, and the walk felt like it was taking forever. But as we got closer, we could see it—the boat that would take us on our sunset cruise. It was a beautiful catamaran called Ocean Spirit. The sight of it was a relief, and I couldn’t help but feel excited for what was ahead. We were finally on our way to experience the sunset from the water.

My mom and I were lucky enough to get a spot right up front and center, and we were both buzzing with excitement. As we began to pull away from the dock, the crew informed us that there was a chance we might spot some whales—something that hadn’t been mentioned in the original sunset cruise! That was a pleasant surprise, and we couldn’t wait to see if we’d get lucky. As we moved away from the shore, the crew started passing around drinks and appetizers, which added to the relaxed atmosphere.
Soon enough, we began to spot whales in the distance. It was amazing—there was one massive whale, along with three smaller ones, which I assumed were babies. It was incredible to see how enormous they were, and watching the water shoot up from their blowholes was such a cool sight. I felt so fortunate to be able to witness something so awe-inspiring right there in front of me. It made the sunset cruise even more special.
As the night came to a close, we were treated to the most beautiful sunset right from the boat. The sky lit up in shades of orange and yellow, casting a warm, golden glow over everything. It was the perfect way to end an unforgettable evening. Watching the sun dip below the horizon while surrounded by the peaceful ocean was a moment I’ll always cherish. It truly felt like the perfect conclusion to an amazing day, and the beauty of it all made everything feel so serene and magical.
As if the evening couldn’t get any better, there was one final, unforgettable treat on the sunset cruise—hearing the whales sing. One of the crew members, with a look of excitement on his face, brought out a microphone and small speaker. He carefully set them up and then, with a flourish, dropped them into the water. We all leaned in, watching with wide eyes as the device sank beneath the surface, and then... the magic happened. The hauntingly beautiful songs of the whales began to fill the air. The deep, resonating calls echoed through the boat, sending chills down my spine. It was like the whales were serenading us, a moment of pure connection with the ocean and its majestic creatures. The sound was so moving, so serene, and it made the night feel even more special. That intimate, awe-inspiring experience was the perfect way to cap off a perfect evening, and it’s something I will cherish and never forget.
Day 7: Sacoring the Last Moments in Paradise
Our final day in Maui had arrived, and while we were sad to see the trip coming to an end, we were determined to make the most of every last moment. By now, we had fully adjusted to island time, allowing us to wake up feeling refreshed instead of groggy. The morning was slow and peaceful—we sat out on the balcony, sipping coffee while watching the waves roll onto the shore. The ocean breeze carried the familiar scent of salt and tropical flowers, a reminder of how special this place was.
Thankfully, our flight wasn’t until 8 PM, which meant we had the entire day to relax and soak in the last bit of paradise. There was no rush, no strict itinerary—just a full day to enjoy the island one last time before heading home.
We spent some time at Auntie’s Kitchen, which had quickly become our favorite place to eat during the trip. Even though it wasn’t the most original spot, there was something comforting about it—the food was always delicious, and the atmosphere felt welcoming. It had become our go-to place, and on our last day, it felt fitting to enjoy one final meal there. I ordered a bacon burger, savoring the perfectly cooked patty and crispy bacon, while my mom opted for the salmon, which she said was just as amazing as the first time she had it. We savored every bite, knowing it would be a while before we’d get to experience these flavors again.

After finishing our meal, we spent most of the day at the beach, hoping to make the most of our final hours in Maui. Unfortunately, we hadn't anticipated how high the tide would be. At times, we were simply sitting on the sand when the water unexpectedly surged up to our feet. One particularly strong wave forced us to scramble, as it threatened to drench everything around us. In a quick attempt to save my belongings, I hurled my bag into the nearby sand dunes, hoping to keep it dry.
Despite our determination to enjoy the beach, the relentless waves made it more of a battle than a peaceful retreat. After a few hours of dodging the tide, we conceded defeat and opted for the tranquility of the pool instead. There, we could finally relax—no surprise waves, no rushing to move our things—just calm water, comfortable lounge chairs, and a chance to unwind before our journey home.
After spending our final moments at the pool, it was time to say goodbye to Maui. We reluctantly packed up, returned our rental car, and made our way to the airport, taking in the last glimpses of paradise before heading to our gate. Our first layover was in Denver, but with a night flight ahead of us, I knew sleep would be a challenge.
The cabin was freezing, making it even harder to get comfortable. To make matters worse, I had someone sitting next to me, limiting my ability to stretch out. I managed to doze off here and there, but it was far from restful. By the time we landed in Denver, exhaustion was setting in, but we were almost home—just one more three-hour flight to Washington, D.C.
Stepping off the plane in D.C., I was immediately hit by a blast of frigid air, sharp and biting, like the cold was trying to freeze me in place. It was such a stark contrast to the warmth of Maui, and I couldn't help but feel a pang of longing for the island's tropical embrace. The chill cut right through my clothes, and for a moment, I wished I had stayed in Maui, opened up a coconut stand with my mom, and lived out the warmth and sunshine just a little longer. The cold felt so harsh, and I couldn't shake the thought of how perfect it would have been to stay there, soaking up the endless summer.
