Treasure
Lighting Artist - Animation
-
Applied lighting techniques to create 3D elements that maintained a 2D visual style, enhancing the artistic direction of the sequences. This was a fun challenge because the director wanted the character to appear 2D, despite already being modeled in 3D. To achieve this, I used harsh rim lighting on the character, applying a fresnel layer to create the 2D look.

Took inspiration from the movie Klaus, where similar lighting techniques were used to convey 2D elements with a 3D appearance. In a YouTube video (starting at 2:18), the filmmakers discuss their approach to lighting, which encouraged me to push the boundaries of my own work on Treasure. Although Klaus used lighting to make 2D characters appear 3D, it inspired me to explore creative lighting solutions for Treasure.
-
Collaborated closely with the director and creative team to achieve the unique visual style.
-
Worked to maintain consistency in lighting across shots while meeting artistic and technical requirements.
-
Contributed to the overall mood and tone of the project through careful manipulation of lighting, emphasizing both character and environment.
Inspiration

This project was especially enjoyable to work on because the director wanted the character to have a 2D appearance, despite being a 3D model. Achieving this look was a challenge, but one that I embraced. To create the illusion of a 2D character, I applied harsh rim lighting using a Fresnel layer, which helped define the character's 2D-like edges.

A lot of my inspiration came from the film Klaus, particularly its unique approach to lighting. In the YouTube video below, the director discusses similar lighting techniques used to achieve that style. Even though Klaus was focused on making 2D characters appear 3D, its innovative lighting choices encouraged me to push the boundaries of my own lighting work for Treasure.
